ay no attention to the man behind the curtain-- er, website. Or don't. This really is an old-fashioned, circa 1994 inspired home page. Gone are the days when we would check out websites just because they were cool, but nevertheless I hope you find my little corner of the Web entertaining. |
Choberi.com reflects my design philosophy of keeping things simple and using the right tools for the job. No Flash, DHTML, ASP, JSP, XML was necessary for this website. So people with limited computing resources can view it okay. Because this site is also my design portfolio, I had to make a few concessions to glitz -- so the home page takes a bit long to load, and you need 16-bit color ("Thousands") to view it properly.
This site is hosted by KangaWeb. They provide good prices and awesome tech support. If you decide to sign up for an account, please do so through this link. :-)
This website is named after a slang phrase that was popular among high school students in Japan a few years ago, but has since fallen somewhat out of fashion. It is used in the following contexts:
![]()
Where "Cho" is the Chinese character for "super", and "beri" is the Japanese pronounciation of the English word "very".
When I read a New York Times article about the phrase (thanks Dan), I thought it was a nifty metaphor for my own background -- part Chinese, part Japanese, and part American (English). Not to mention the bit about being slightly out of fashion. ;-)
Always the nonconformist, which is probably why I haven't lived in my own country for the past 2 years, use a Macintosh, and consider myself simultaneously an environmentalist and a car nut. I'm from San Francisco, but I've lived in San Diego, Silicon Valley, Vancouver (Canada), and a smattering of other places, too. Since August 2002 I've been teaching Engrish on the JET Programme in the backwoods of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. I was born in the year Showa 52, so you can figure out how old I am. Here's a little movie of me taken way back in 1995...
